WhistlePig Straight Rye Whiskey

Whiskey Review: WhistlePig Straight Rye WhiskeyFew companies can tout the fact that they employ a naturally gifted prodigy like Dave Pickerell.  As he has dominated, the world of fine whiskey distillation with a resume boasting numerous exploits like developing the critically acclaimed whiskey Makers Mark and the restoration of George Washington’s personal distillery. Dave Pickerell continues to prove that he is a giant amongst boys and in regards to his passion and ability to develop spirits, it is unmatched.  Dave Pickerell graduated from the prestigious U.S. West Point Military Academy with a degree in chemistry which he has perspicaciously used to develop his wondrous creations.  As soon as you uncork the beautiful bottle of his magnum opus, WhistlePig, one thing makes itself known right off the bat; this is one whiskey that demands you’re attention.  Distilled in Vermont, Whistlepig is a 100% rye whiskey and the divine nectar has a rich and smokey nose that’s balanced by a noticeable alcoholic aroma.  At 100 proof, this spirit is truly a work of art in terms of its shear execution and is shown constantly through its velvety smoothness and rounded finish delivered in each and every sip.  Add a drop or two of pure water to the mix, and the complexion of this fine whiskey transforms entirely featuring a completely separate level of sweetness that would otherwise go unappreciated.  Unfortunately, this amazing creation is currently only available in New York and California making it problematically difficult for most to sample.  However, don’t let that become your reason for discouragement, instead embrace the fact that with a quick online order and a few anxious days you could be partaking in the enjoyment of an exclusively limited spirit that has received the highest marks from Wine Enthusiast within the rye whiskey spectrum.

It is actually found in more states. Living in Florida, I couldn’t find it but after contacting them, they said they were available in California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Delaware, Illinois, Louisiana, Mass., Maryland, NJ, NY, Oregon, Vt and Washington. Though they aren’t in Florida (hopefully soon though), I was able to get some off http://www.drinkupny.com. Really a stellar whiskey!

Great spirit! But, it wasn’t distilled by David Pickerell nor in the US. It was distilled in Canada 10 years ago.

Thanks Rob, your’re right! WhistlePig was not distilled by Pickerell and WhistlePig distillery (originally, as it is today), instead it was sourced and bottled from Canada.

No it was not a Louisville Born or raised Rye..but it was an amazing find Dave could not leave in Canada…It is bottled on his partners five hundred acre farm in Vermont, where they are growing the rye currently to be made into the new batch of rye. Which will be done in all the fashion listed above. ” Farm to Bottle”

WhistlePig has yet to actually distill anything. And of course, after they do they’ll still have to wait for a decade to have any 10 year old whiskey.
