As you may have read in one of my previous articles, I am not a fan of fruit infused malt beer. However, I did happen to come across a brand new product called Vampt that certainly won’t make me a convert but, for the first time I wasn’t repulsed by an overly acidic flavored brew. Vampt is very new to the scene and is produced by the Vampt Brewing Company out of Cold Springs, MN. Currently it is being produced in two different incarnations, the Smooth Talker and the Midnight Warrior. Both have very stylish packaging and boast an unusually high 8 percent ABV, which surprised me considering the concoction doesn’t actually taste like malt liquor. Tonight I sampled the Smooth Talker, an agave and nectarine flavored brew that tastes like you’ve just been pelted in the mouth with a ripe nectarine, in a good way of course. The nose is powerful with the scent of nectarine and the profile of the drink itself is a bright and vibrant citrus that starts sweet and quickly becomes tart with a smooth and crisp finish. Like all acidic drinks, the after taste can eventually become a bit overpowering and may almost certainly lead to a bit of heartburn. Unlike most typical malt beverage fruit drinks, it was actually somewhat refreshing. With marketing slogans like “Transform the Night” and “May the smoothest man win” it’s pretty clear that Vampt has spent a lot of time trying to develop not only a beverage, but also a trendy marketing personality, which they obviously hope will lead to both unique notoriety and sales. So far I can’t say it’s my new favorite brew, but it did get my attention as a new contender in the ever expanding fruit flavored malt beverage marketplace. It will definitely impress those who are already fans of infused malt beverages who prefer the taste over that of regular ale. When it comes to your local retailer you may want to give it a shot and save it for a hot day when you plan to lounge by the pool or when you feel like transforming the night!
