While attending the Universal Whisky Experience I had a chance to meet with a Jameson representative and she and I spoke at length about some of the new projects that may or may not become available to the general public in the near future. For example, I was fortunate enough to sample a limited release edition of the Jameson reserve black barrel. Designed for the South African palate, the whiskey is an expertly blended combination of pot distilled, un-malted barley whiskey aged in sherry casks and Jameson’s small batch whiskey matured in old Wild Turkey Barrels. Right in line with all its brethren, the Black Barrel has a strong vanilla and roasted almond flavor initially, but as the profile progresses a peppery spice note begins to steal the show. Although incredibly smooth and well balanced, the Black Barrel is definitely a departure from Jameson’s signature light, highly distilled and sweet vanilla profile. Currently only available in South Africa, the Black Barrel will soon be available in New York for market testing. As would be expected by Jameson, the Black Barrel is yet another fantastic addition to an already full stable of what I consider to be some of the best whiskeys available on the market!
