Senor Rio 100% Blue Agave Anejo Tequila
So how many real estate agents and accountants does it take to create a high quality and refined tequila that’s beginning to take the U.S. by storm? Apparently two, John Gach and his partner Debbie Medina, producers of Senor Rio Tequila. Senor Rio is the culmination of generations of tequila distilling wisdom passed down to John and Debbie from family members currently living in Mexico. After years of success in their prior careers the two decided to leave their known professions and take up the challenge of distilling premium tequila and bringing it to market. True self starters, John and Debbie have spent the last five years designing, testing, perfecting and selling their libation with little to no help from the classic alcohol industries economic engines. Currently, Senor Rio Tequila is available in seven states including Connecticut, Arizona, California, Oregon, Vermont, Illinois, and Tennessee with expansion planned for Florida and New York. What makes their tequila so impressive is their constant focus on using only all natural, quality ingredients combined with their undeniable passion for making a superior product. Constantly assessing quality, John makes a commitment to take several trips a year into Mexico to inspect the Blue Weber Agaves used to distill Senor Rio Tequila and to oversee operations during the bottling process. During fermentation the pots used to contain the mixture are left open and fully exposed to the scents and aromas from the nearby citrus crop infusing the tequila with bright, crisp notes. Even the yeast used in the distillation process comes from the blue agave plants themselves. With all the constant attention to detail it’s no wonder that Senor Rio Tequila and especially their Anejo tequila is one of the finest examples of aged tequila I have ever come across. Aged for 2 full years the Anejo is a double distilled, single barrel, small batch tequila that is packed with complexity and brimming with sweet and full bodied charred white oak notes. Personally, I tend to be more of a whiskey or bourbon fan and in that light the aging process that the tequila undergoes is so uniquely long that it takes on some of the profiles and characteristics of a single barrel whiskey or bourbon. The sweet and smoky profile pairs perfectly with the rich and slightly spicy flavor of the blue agave. The finish is long, well balanced and mellow. Frankly, with a 90+ point rating from Wine Enthusiast this one’s a no-brainer, if you are a tequila fan than Senor Rio Tequila Anejo is a must buy. As they put it, Senor Rio is “A taste of pure elegance for anyone who shares a passion for one of life’s greatest pleasures. Explore all your senses in a sensual yet sophisticated bottle filled with liquid gold.” So expect to see it on the shelves at your local watering hole in the near future, but until then you can find it at several of the warehouse alcohol retailers.
