Rogue Voodoo Doughnut: Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Banana Ale
Today’s Quiz: What beer pairs best with doughnuts?
In my much younger college days my life mimicked that of a prequel to Homer Simpson – my Saturday breakfasts consisted of beer or donuts or, if I was flush with cash, both.
If Rogue Brewery had been around back then, my Saturday morning decisions would have been easier.
Located in Newport Oregon, Rogue lists over 40 craft ales in the 2012 release schedule as well as whiskey, gin, rum and root beer.
The kind folks at Rogue have created the perfect Homer Simpson style breakfast drinks: Voodoo Doughnut Ales. Combining beer and donuts in one container! Eureka!
Giving a tip of the hat to world famous Voodoo Doughnuts, Rogue has now crafted two limited release ales based on popular donuts available in the Oregonian three-store Voodoo chain. The first, available last year, was fashioned after the Maple Bacon Bar and this year’s choice is the Memphis Mafia doughnut (chocolate, peanut butter and banana).
The beer pours out dark brown and develops a slight beige head with an average level of carbonation. The ABV is shown as 5.3% -a bit lower than the color would imply. Once in the glass, the nose detects all three intended bouquets with chocolate being the most dominant. The taste pulls a fast one though by the chocolate and banana combination overpowering the peanut butter entirely. Overall the body is a tad thin.
It was an interesting experience but not likely to replace real Voodoo Doughnuts in the morning.
Bottled in pink that mimics the famed donut shop boxes, this novelty brew is available online and at select retailers for $13 (USD) 750ml.
As a note: The Simpsons recently aired a show*giving a hat tip to Voodoo Doughnuts (as “Devil Donuts” from Portland) complete and included a “beer- keg” donut.
*Season 24 episode 7 aired 12/9/2012 “The Day the Earth Stood Cool”
