Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Bourbon
If you’ve taken a trip recently to one of your local warehouse spirit shops you may have noticed that the size of the whiskey section has grown exponentially in the last few years with labels boasting accolades like “produced in small batches”, single barrel maturation or limited edition releases. Now, there is no doubt that eight times out of ten the specialty spirits are superior examples in every way when compared to their lower priced brethren. However, as few and far between as they are, plenty of companies out there are clearly marketing oriented rather than quality based. Thankfully, I recently sampled a Jim Beam Co. small batch that’s derived from a recipe that’s been around nearly as long as the United States. This spirit perfectly emphasizes a balance of traditional quality with refined style. Part of a series of special small batch creations, Basil Hayden’s has emerged to become one of the real standouts from the collection. Even though, Basil Hayden’s has somehow managed to stay relatively unknown to most of the consuming public. Made from a family recipe dating back to 1796, Basil Hayden’s delivers super premium, quality whiskey that deserves it’s due and it’s high time everyone gets to know this top shelf Kentucky bourbon. One of the major differences between Basil Hayden’s and other premium whiskeys of its ilk is the fact that the distillers use a combination of bases comprised of both corn and twice as much rye as compared to traditional bourbons. This results in a combination that is so unique and dynamic, this spirit quickly separates itself from the pack. Essentially the corn keeps the bourbon smooth while the rye adds a warm spice profile. According to Basil Hayden, the bourbon is “aged for eight years in new American white oak barrels, then charcoal-filtered and chill-filtered for an incredibly approachable, sophisticated and luxurious bourbon.” The nose has a typical sweet oaky note that blends well with hints of medium bodied spice. The flavor is excellent with a peppery punch at the front and a smooth warm finish that really shows off the skill involved during the maturing process. The sheer amount of rye used is prominently noticeable, but eventually fades out in comparison to the sweetness from the corn. Retailing for around $40.00 a bottle, this eight year bourbon is a perfect fit for any appreciator of fine whiskey. Combined with the styling of the bottle and it’s prolific history, Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Bourbon easily deserves a spot among your finest spirits!
