Odell’s Bourbon Barrel Stout

odellIn keeping with the ever approaching winter holiday traditions, it’s getting towards the time of year for powerhouse ports and stacked stouts to be consumed in mass quantities.  One such winter beast is the Bourbon Barrel Stout brewed by Odell Brewing Company.  As part of a collection known as the Woodcut Oak Aged Series, the Bourbon Barrel Stout is the epitome of quality driven craft brewing.  As the story goes “In the fall of 2007, we [Odell] received our first shipment of oak barrels from Canton Cooperage in Kentucky.  The barrels, cut from New American Oak, were specifically crafted with a medium toast to give the beer added flavor and depth.”  The medium toasting process the New American Oak barrels receive is one of the major deviations that set Odell’s process apart from other craft beer companies which typically use charred White Oak during maturation.  For Odell, the Bourbon Barrel Stout continues to round out the ever growing portfolio of highly refined and expertly crafted brews.  “Our Bourbon Barrel Stout, aged for months in hand selected Kentucky Bourbon Barrels, blends the characteristics of a great single barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey with and American Craft Brewers take on an English Imperial Stout.”

The nose of the Stout is subdued and only mildly reminiscent of warming bourbon.  As far as flavor goes, prepare to be bowled over with malty chocolate notes layered under a powerful dark roasted coffee profile.  A slight sweetness follows as the initial flavors begin to mellow and then the brew finishes with just a hint of sourness emanating from the bourbon.  At 11.5 ABV this is definitely a beer designed for sipping. Perfect for pairing with rich holiday meals or around a nice warm fire with friends and family, this is definitely a beer worth seeking out and getting a hold of.  So go grab yourself one of Odell’s barrel-like oversized bottles filled with their limited release concoction and let the holidays begin!
