Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon
For me, there’s nothing that completes an evening better than having a fine cigar and a highball filled with a generous pour of nicely aged Kentucky Bourbon. Over the years, through experimentation and sheer perseverance, I have managed to develop a fairly extensive knowledge of whiskey’s and bourbon’s along with a healthy respect for the importance of avoiding hangovers. Recently, I was lucky enough to get a hold of a spirit I had previously been unfamiliar with; Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon and I can say whole heartedly, I was very impressed. The Blanton Single Barrel process is nearly a century old and has remained virtually unchanged since it was developed by Colonel Albert B. Blanton from his personal recipe for his Private Reserve Bourbon. As the name implies the single barrel process requires that the bourbon in each barrel remain separated until each barrel reaches its peak maturity. This tends to result in smoother, richer and mellower bourbon. At first pour the exquisitely cared for concoction shows off its dark amber hue and well balanced nose comprised of oaky wood and vanilla notes. The flavor is rich and powerful with a slightly overwhelming alcohol burn which is expected due to its high alcohol content of 46.5 percent. Overall, this is exceptional bourbon and should be tried by anyone who considers themselves a bourbon connoisseur. Clearly Blanton’s, as a company, are firm believers in the old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and let me assure you, there’s nothing broke here!
