Starting in 2008, Stone brewing company of San Diego began to release a new series of collaboration beers. The goal was to get three brewers from three different breweries to have some fun with no regards for boundaries. No restrictions on fitting a beer into a lineup, using familiar ingredients, conforming to preconceived beer styles, using tested procedures in the brewing process or even affordability. This beer is the result of three brewers coming together and doing what they love.
Pouring this collaboration brew reveals that a lot is going on in the bottle. Brewers Jason Fields & Kevin Sheppard, Jon Trogner of Tröegs Brewing Company, Harrisburg, PA and Mitch Steele of Stone Brewing Co., San Diego put their frothy heads together and threw caution to the wind. At the pour there is a slight separation of ingredients both dark brown and amber with an almost syrupy look and a brown-reddish head that dissolved quickly. Out of all of the contents of its name the fact that it’s a stout is apparent upon first taste.
Stout beers typically feature a heavily roasted flavor profile and denote a strong and weighty beer. This one is brewed with 9000 pounds of Washington’s Premier Trout cherries, Callebaut (chocolate liquor), vanilla beans and then aged in a wooden cask.
The cherry flavor comes through as the beer warms up and is both tart and sweet but not overpowering. This is good as the added flavors are a nice surprise. Paired with a medium to full cigar, this brew would be a delightful and satisfying experience.
Because their collaborations are usually only brewed once, they can be rather difficult to find, and once they run out—they run out. Consider yourself warned. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on this liquid tribute to the spirit of camaraderie, I think you’ll agree that the end result is worth it.
