Mixin’ it Up: The Caipirinha!

Mixin’ it Up: The Caipirinha!
The Caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil.  This exotic beverage is rapidly becoming an international favorite, as well as a favorite amongst the beach crowd. The caipirinha is made with Leblon Cachaca ( cuh-SHA-suh ) a brazilian rum and is often considered a good alternative to the mojito, as it contains the same ingredients minus the mint. As a bartender, I often suggest the Caipirinha to those who are looking for something international and exotic. So for you my friends, here is the recipe. You will need….

  • 2 ounces Leblon Cachaca ( Sagatiba is a solid brand )
  • 1 teaspoon white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 lime cut into wedges
  • club soda to fill

Mixing it:

  • muddle the limes and sugar in a mixing glass
  • add the Cachaca and ice
  • shake
  • strain into a rocks glass with ice
  • add club soda to fill
  • garnish with a lime wedge

There you go! Some like to make this without the club soda, and to be honest either way is correct, but I personally prefer the club soda. At the end of the day its all about you, the beverage enthusiast, and your personal taste. I always like to encourage experimentation. After all, thats how these classic cocktails are born. So have fun and enjoy. Drink well my friends!        -Jake
