Four Peaks is a nationally recognized brewery in Tempe Arizona that has been brewing fine craft beer for a number of years. Best known for their “Kilt Lifter,” Four Peaks also puts out an excellent hefeweizen, IPA (Hop Knot), Sunbru (a Kolsch style ale), and an English style “Best Bitter” brew with a mild sweet malt flavor (8th Street Ale), and more. Check out their website for all their offerings.
I just partook of their Barrel Aged Belgium Black and was thoroughly blown away with its rich flavor and wonderful smoothness. It truly is a black brew (not brown or amber) and has no bitterness or acidity like many stout brews. This release is limited to only a few casks. Brewed with an Arizona date syrup and aged for two years in wine casks, this Belgian Black clocks in at 10% alcohol, but you’d never know it by the taste. It has a smooth and pleasant flavor that compliments a medium to full cigar. It is definitely fruity in flavor (plums and bananas) but not overpowering, and has a slightly smoky aroma as well. As I talked with the beer traffic controller from Four Peaks (Ted – great guy!), it was evident that this release was brewed with passion and a love for a fine well crafted beer. Though you may not be able to partake of the Barrel Aged Belgium Black due to its limited release, check out Four Peaks brewery and know that you are dealing with a company that is committed to excellence in crafting a fine brew in all its offerings.
Verdict: Find it now while you can! (If you are in the Gilbert area check out Fox Cigar Bar)
