Devils Backbone Schwartz Bier German Style Black Lager
So this is pretty crazy! While visiting my family over the holidays, I had an opportunity to stop and have a beer at the home of one of the fastest growing craft beer brewing companies in the U.S., The Devils Backbone Brewery. Unbeknownst to most, the owner of the Devils Backbone, Steve Crandall, spent the majority of his career in luxury home construction, and as I fortuitously found out at this years GABF, he happened to construct my parents home in Virginia just a few years ago. Overtime, my parents and Steve have become good friends and in honor of that friendship, Steve chose the particular spelling of his new German style black lager to reflect the spelling of my own family’s last name; Schwartz. I wanted to suggest to Steve that he emblazon “Liquid Schwartz” somewhere on the label, but not only would it look out of place, Mel Brooks would probably sue him into the ground. Steve’s new brew is set to release soon, if it hasn’t already, and will be available in select markets (mostly the Southeast U.S.). Here’s some info on the Devils Backbone Schwartz Bier.
Press Release: Derived from the recipes of medieval Germanic brewers, our Schwartz Bier embodies a millennium of refinement. Schwarzbier (literally: black beer) originates from eastern Germany and is a window into pre-modern brewing. Medieval brewers browned barley over open flames; today we get the finest toasted malts. This sophisticated little gem is fermented with lager yeast, and finishes quick and dry. Take this modern treasure home to your castle today!
