Many whiskey drinkers typically shy away from Canadian brews due to their rye origins and lack of supposedly true whiskey or bourbon complexions. However, there are a few spirits out there that not only rise, but sometimes surpass the expectations of even the most seasoned connoisseur. First exported to the United States in 1965, Crown Royal was specifically shipped to Canadian migrant workers who fervently toiled on inherently dangerous oil rigs off the coast of Texas. Crown Royal, is of course, a well known and prestigious brand producing some of the finest Canadian whiskey in today’s market place and their limited edition XR is without a doubt their crème de la crème. Produced using blends of their legendary concoction derived from the uniquely filtered water at their Waterloo distillery circa 1857, this particular spirit is a true one-of-a-kind. Having been one of the most sought after blends over the last five years I have the unfortunate responsibility of letting every consumer know that this is their final year of producing this amazing creation and according to their representative, it will not be returning to the shelves. The whiskey is full bodied and balanced with a creamy and rounded finish. Touting rich and smokey notes combined with a clean and sweet curtain call this is one whiskey that should easily be included in the “this is one of the best whiskey’s I’ve ever had” conversation. Pairing the Crown Royal XR is ridiculously easy as this is one of those non-specific elevators that shares kismet with anything. If you’re like me and consider it your personal duty as an honorable American, and well rounded human being, to sample all whiskeys regardless of its country of origin for posterity’s sake then go now and be one of the lucky few to boast they own a bottle of one of the rarest and finest whiskeys available today!
